Today we will practice writing from general to specific.  Go to Google Classroom  Then we will begin preparing to write our scenes.   Think of a movie you liked: Who was the main character? What did they want to do during the movie? What stopped them from doing it? What did they do to try and get what they wanted? What happened in the end? Did they get what they wanted? Discuss: Character:  Protagonist, antagonist Objective: Goal, need, or want of a character Obstacle: What or who is getting in the way of the character achieving their objective? Tactics: What does the character DO to get around the obstacle? Resolution: How does the story end? Does the character get what he or she wants? What would a movie be like without a conflict (objective/obstacle) Crumpled Paper Activity!  You will LOVE this

Sorry I am out today! I had to attend a meeting.  Please look back at the feedback you received on your writing in writing group on Thursday. Consider all of the suggestions and comments you received and begin to revise your piece.  Make it AWESOME. Use the Language Tools Add-on to edit your work. Just click add-ons at the top of your Google Doc. It will pop up! Once you have finished revising AND editing, please post your piece to Kidblog.  If you are new to my class and didn't join Kidblog, instructions are in Google Classroom. It is OKAY to post if you have not finished your piece.   Once you have posted, please comment on FOUR other people's work from our class period.  Make your comments specific.   If you finish, you may work on anything of your choice.

Rick Reilly Columnist, ESPN.com Facebook Twitter Facebook Messenger Pinterest Email print comment CONGRATS, NEWLY MINTED NBA ROOKIE! Now you've been drafted. Next comes the delicious multimillion-dollar contract. And that's when you must do what most NBA players do: start going through cash like Jack Black through the Keebler factory. Filing for bankruptcy is a long-standing tradition for NBA players, 60% of whom, according to the Toronto Star, are broke five years after they retire. The other 40% deliver the Toronto Star. It's not just NBA players who have the fiscal sense of the Taco Bell Chihuahua. All kinds of athletes wind up with nothing but lint in their pockets. And if everyone from Johnny Unitas to Sheryl Swoopes to Lawrence Taylor can do it, so can you! With my How to Go Bankrupt* DVD series, it's a layup to go belly-up! Ten essentials, just to get you started: 1. Screw up, deny it, then fight by using every lawyer and dime

Who Are You? Mask Poem Please Hear What I’m Not Saying Poem by Charles C. Finn I originally posted this on my Facebook years ago but recently stumbled upon it again and thought I should share it. This is a slightly adapted version of  the poem authored by Charles C. Finn Don’t be fooled by me. Don’t be fooled by the face I wear, For I wear a mask, I wear a thousand masks, Masks that I am afraid to take off, But none of them are me. Pretending is an art that’s second nature to me. But don’t be fooled I give you the impression that I am secure, That all is sunny and unruffled with me, Within as well as without, That confidence is my name and coolness is my game, That the water’s calm and I am in command, And that I need no one. Don’t believe me, please! My surface may be smooth, But my surface is my mask, My varying and ever-concealing mask. Beneath lies the real me, In confusion and fear, In loneliness. I idly chatter with you in the suave tones of

Today we will meet in Writing Groups .  We will discuss more ways to give and receive feedback before we meet. First, you will play two truths and a lie with your new group.  Then you will share your work with your group on Google Docs. You must read it aloud.   They will read it and go in to the SUGGESTING mode to give you feedback on your piece.   We will come back to class and you will revise your piece using the feedback you received. When you are finished, you will publish it to KIDBLOG .  Then you will comment on three other people's work. You will work on your dramatic moment piece when you finish.

We will look at two images and take notes on what we see.  We will be keen observers.  Then, you will write a story or description of what you see in the picture. You may take on any point of view you wish!    Afterwards, I will tell you what's "really going on" in the picture! Picture #1 PICTURE #2 We will have a Mini-Lesson on creating a dramatic scene You will then write your own! Creating a Dramatic Scene Write down a memory you have from when you were between the ages of four and ten A memory from sixth grade A memory from the summer Write no more than two sentences about the memory. Here’s a memory I have from high school: When I moved to Papillion, Nebraska and attended high school, I was almost killed by a group of girls.  The police came. NOW-Write about it but be dramatic!  Use dialogue and description.  Make it come alive for the reader I managed to meet one friend my first week at Papillion HIgh School.  THe fact

Work on adding the FIVE senses, as well as dialogue.  Try to give your piece a beginning, middle, and end.   Share with a table mate and have them ask three questions.   Save your work to you Creative Writing Folder. Work on Kindness Scenes in your assigned groups If time, work on revising either your orange piece or your teacher piece.

Today we will be opening up the Google Doc shared with us on Thursday. I will show you how to use the "suggesting" mode to make comments on other people's work.  You will: 1) Highlight your favorite sentence and explain WHY it is your favorite sentence. 2)   Highlight best example of sight in aqua. Highlight best example of touch in pink Highlight best example of sound in yellow Highlight best example of taste in green Highlight  best example of smell in orange The writer may not have all of the five senses.  That's okay!   Then, ask the writer TWO questions.  These should be questions that if answered, would make the writing better and more descriptive.   Example: Can you think of a simile to describe what it felt like? Can you think of a more powerful verb than ate to describe how you ate it? We will then write a "showing writing" piece. Mrs. K will give you some ideas.
